An Introduction to Richard Hughes as WPA’s new Regional Director
Describe your role at the Welsh Procurement Alliance:
I’m delighted to have been appointed as the Regional Director of the Welsh Procurement Alliance. My role will be supporting a very well established and talented procurement team, based in Caerphilly, to support organisations in Wales with their procurement needs.
What was your work experience before joining the Welsh Procurement Alliance?
I have been fortunate to hold a number of posts within the past two decades supporting the public sector with solutions mainly focussed around housing. Having spent time at British Gas supporting the energy efficiency improvements in social housing, to my time at Mitie Property Services and Mears Group as Partnership Development Director working on Repairs, Asset Management and Capital Works programmes.
Why did you choose the Welsh Procurement Alliance?
Growing up in Wales, it is a fantastic opportunity for me to apply and combine my knowledge of the Public Sector and local communities.
What does the future hold for your role at the Welsh Procurement Alliance?
I’m looking forward to working closely with our Associate Partners, valued Clients and Appointed Companies, to deliver positive community outcomes for Wales.
What does reaching the Gold Standard mean for WPA?
The Gold Standard is a significant milestone for the Welsh Procurement Alliance and is a true reflection of the capability and professionalism of the team and brand. Our partners should take comfort that we are leading the way in procurement excellence and that we have achieved this level of recognition.
What plans do you have for WPA’s Social Value offering going forward?
I’m excited about the creative nature of our ambitions to drive Social Value in all that we do and especially about our new Community Benefit Fund model that will better help responsible procurement by supporting the clear evidencing of the impact Social Value can make.
How will WPA’s new Retrofit and Decarbonisation (N9) Framework improve the construction industry in Wales?
The New Retrofit and Decarbonisation Framework is of particular interest to me given my background and I’m passionate about the impact that this will have in supporting the Welsh Governments’ drive on the Net Zero Agenda. This Framework will support Welsh organisations to lower their carbon footprint, support the significant reduction of energy bills and where it is housing related, support the combat against fuel poverty which is significantly needed.
